‘We are pleased to announce the release of Martin Schoeller’s new monograph entitled “Identical: Portraits of Twins,” with an introduction by artist Marina Abramović. Building on a project that first appeared in the January 2012 issue of National Geographic, Martin headed back to the National Twins Day Festival in Twinsberg, Ohio to capture twins, triplets and quadruplets. The book features twins, shot in Schoeller’s signature “Close Up” style, side by side on full bleed spreads, allowing the viewer to compare and contrast the faces of the genetically identical. There is even a fold out that includes quadruplets.’

Martin suggests in his artist statement, that “A photographic close-up is perhaps the purest form of portraiture, creating a confrontation between the viewer and the subject that daily interaction makes impossible, or at least impolite. In a close-up, the impact stems largely from the static subject’s expression or apparent lack thereof, so the viewer is challenged to read a face without the benefit of the environmental cues we naturally use to form our interpersonal reactions.”
